I’ve had the pleasure to review a couple of books from Taunton Press and they all have exceptionally beautiful photographs. Fine Cooking’s Cakes & Cupcakes: 100 Best-Ever Recipes is no exception. The pictures are so gorgeous they can make a cake junkie like me weep. This book features the best made-from-scratch recipes that will make you ditch those boxed cake mixes in your cupboard. It’s also full of tips and step-by-step instructions.
But now the question is which one to try. Aside from the classics like Butter Rum Pudding Cake and Classic Vanilla Tres Leches Cake, there are some unusual ones like Blueberry Cornbread Cake, Espresso Gingerbread Cake, Cinnamon Ganache Cake, Chocolate Beet Layer Cake, Frozen Lemon Cream Cakes with Toasted Meringue and Caramel Sauce. Plus there’s an intriguing Southern Devil’s Food Cake. This cake reminds me of my dad – not because he’s Southern (or the devil!) but he always bought a devil’s food cake at our favorite bakery.
More experienced bakers can try their hand at some show-stopper cakes like Chocolate Confetti Chiffon Cake with Almond Crunch and Coconut Meringue Cake that are sure to impress. There’s a cake for everyone! Fine Cooking triple tests their recipes so you can be sure to get excellent results. And the recipes in this book are from award-winning chefs, food writers, authors, and recipe developers.
